Technique for Power & More Distance
Problem: No Power (Weak hits, Lack of Distance, or Ball goes Sky-high) a) Tee shot usually slices, resulting in a lot less distance than expected plus Accuracy problems!!!! b) Irons cut across the ball or scoop the ball!!!
Cause: Could be one or several of the following reasons; 1) “Outside to In” Down Path cuts across the ball (glancing blow) 2) Lack of Releasing the hands, wrists and forearms thru impact 3) Releasing too early (just swinging the arms, no body rotation thru impact) 4) Lack of weight shift into the ball at impact (hanging back) 5) Lack of Body (Hips and Shoulders) rotating thru impact (large muscles of the torso not used, just the arm muscles), affects both Distance & Accuracy.
Rx recommended; To get more distance you have to 1st, strike the ball in the center of the club face and 2nd, you have to increase the club head speed through impact and Shift your weight thru the ball.
Rx for the 1st, to hit the ball square on the clubface, you have to learn to swing “inside to out” on your downswing, (inside to out down path or swing plane). Most amateur golfers swing across the ball from an “outside to in” swing path thus striking the ball with a glancing blow!!!!! (thus no power and bad direction will result). To hit from the “inside to out” simply “close your shoulders slightly at setup” and on your downswing “swing along your shoulder line”. (a square hit, accuracy, and power will result)
Rx for the 2nd, To Increase club head speed, and Shift your weight, you have to a) Release the hands, wrists and forearms through the ball at impact plus, b) Get the large muscles of the torso and hip into the downswing by rotating your hips and shoulders through impact. This results in more power and more accurate shots and weight should shift automatically). Note; Releasing through the ball is very similar to swinging a bat at a ball in baseball except that in baseball it is a horizontal plane and in golf it is a vertical swing plane. Just relax the arms and shoulders and imagine you are swinging at a baseball and your forearms should release automatically.
