Technique to Relax at Setup/Address
Problem: When a player gets over a ball and stays perfectly still for a period of time (i.e. essentially FREEZES over a ball), the muscles of the legs, arms, and shoulders get rigid and prevents a free flowing take away and smoothness in the swing. Usually this also prevents the hands, wrists and forearms to release through impact and results in loss of club head speed (power), plus accuracy problems,(shots pushed, slices etc.)
Cause: The player is usually going through a list of swing and setup mechanics in his/her mind to ensure everything is perfect!! “Paralysis from Analysis”!!
Rx recommended: - Develop a technique to relax the body (legs, arms, shoulders, and neck muscles) when your over the ball. - Don’t take any more than 4 to 5 seconds before you start the take away. - Practice all your Pre-swing basics/mechanics at home to a point where they are automatic. - Don’t wait until you get to the course to check these pre-swing basics (such as-correct grip, ball placement, posture & balance, aiming etc.)when you’re addressing the ball.
Suggested techniques to relax the muscles at address: - Shift the weight slightly back and forth on the balls of the feet. - Develop a WAGGLE, such as, swinging the club head back and forth with the wrists and gradually relax the grip pressure until you can feel the weight of the club head then you’re ready to take the club back with relaxed arms.
Note: In all sports the muscles have to be relaxed for optimum performance. E.g. In Tennis the player waiting to receive the serve is usually always pacing or shifting weight back and forth. In Baseball the batter is always moving and shifting weight back and forth and the same for the players in the field.
