Weight Shifting Technique
By: Golf Guru - Director of Golf Instruction
Weight Shifting Technique (APPLYS TO LEFT & RIGHT HANDED PLAYERS) Terms: FORWARD = BODY SIDE CLOSEST TO TARGET BACK = BODY SIDE FARTHEST FROM TARGET
Problem; not shifting weight into the ball on the downswing through impact! (Note; shifting weight from the backside to the forward side is key to power in any sport)
Description; Many of my students over the years came to me with the problem of “Hanging Back” (weight on the back side) through impact!
Cause; The most common reason I observed was swinging too hard and forcing every shot to get that maximum power & distance!!! Sound familiar??? This usually resulted in the upper body recoiling back as the club & hands go through impact, thus the weight stays back resulting in loss of Power, Distance, and usually affects Accuracy. (Imagine throwing a punch at a punching bag with the weight on your back foot as your fist is hitting the bag,,,PUFF-no power!! Imagine throwing a baseball from 3rd base to 1st base with your weight on your back foot,,,no power, lucky if the ball makes it to the pitchers mound!!) Rx recommended; The fix that has been quite successful in getting my students to shift their weight automatically I call the “ KNEES TECHNIQUE”.
DESCRIPTION (KNEES TECHNIQUE) Backswing - Forward knee goes pass the ball – Forward Ankle rolls in. Downswing – Back knee drives pass the ball and toward the target As the Back ankle rolls in. . DRILL (KNEES TECHNIQUE) 1) Grip a PENCIL in your hands and gradually go through the backswing and the downswing motions focusing on the knee & ankle action…..repeat this swing several times…..You will notice that your weight is shifting automatically.!!!! (note; it would help you to smooth your swing and give you rhythm in your swing if you would say on the backswing, “front knee” and on the downswing, “back knee”.) ((i.e. “front knee”- “back knee”, ”front knee”- “back knee”……over & over again..)) 2) Now try this drill with a CLUB, focusing only on the knee action as your swinging. 3) Now try it with EVERY SWING on the course, again focusing on the knee action as you are swinging. Your swing will become smoother and you will complete the forward swing with the weight on the front side ( a key to power in every sport).
