CHIP and RUN
By: Golf Guru - Director of Golf Instruction
CHIP and RUN (TECHNIQUE RECOMMENDED FOR BALL UP TO 25 YDS OFF THE GREEN)
Terminology: Chipping - defined as a LOW trajectory shot. (Usually using a low lofted club, such as a 6I, 7I, 8I) Pitching - defined as a HIGH trajectory shot. (Usually using a high lofted club, such as pw, sw, lw )
Observation: Many players use a pw/sw when their ball is just off the green (approx 5 to 25 yds) They PITCH the ball to some place on the green and hope that it RELEASES/ROLLS close to the pin.
Problem: This technique (using a high lofted club) usually is not dependable, is inconsistent and is hard to judge how far to PITCH the ball onto the green and usually results in the ball coming up short of the pin or rolls pass the pin (3 putt range !!!!!).
Rx recommended: (use the CHIP and RUN technique) For a ball up to 25 yds off the green use the CHIP and RUN technique. Assumes no "nasty" hazards to go over (bunkers, water, etc)note; if you're close enough to the green to use your putter, use it, since the putter is your most accurate club in the bag.
CHIP and RUN technique Select a low lofted club (e.g.; 6I, 7I, 8I), just sufficient loft to clear the fairway grass and land 2 feet onto the green so it can ROLL to the pin. Stroke the ball just as you would if you had a putter in your hand (smooth and through, think PUTT) SET UP parameters; place the BALL off your back instep, WEIGHT on the forward side.
How HARD to hit the ball; (swing THOUGHT/IMAGE) Reach out and pull the edge of the green back to your ball. You are now on the green. Stroke the ball with as much force as if you were putting that distance. The loft of the club you selected will loft the ball over the fairway grass and land just on the green and roll up close to the pin (1 putt range !!!). Forget your chipping the ball and think PUTT & ROLL!!!.
