TOPPING OR HITTING BEHIND BALL
By: Golf Guru - Director of Golf Instruction
Q: Why am I hitting behind (i.e. hitting fat) the ball with my irons ????????? A: Answer is two fold: 1. The most common cause is not shifting your weight through the ball (i.e. your weight is on the back side, "hanging back") at impact. Rx/correction;***** Usually the natural smooth rotation of the hips and torso shifts the weight back and forth. On the downswing let the body rotation pull the arms through, rather than forcing or pushing the club through with your strong back side. If you force the shot you will recoil back and hang back through impact thus hitting the ground behind the ball. "Hitting Fat"!!!!!
2. Another reason for hitting behind the ball could be that the ball is positioned too far forward in your stance.
Rx/correction;***** Position the ball in the middle of your stance, this way you have a better chance of striking the ball at the BOTTOM of your ARC, which is in the middle of of your STANCE. Q: Why am I TOPPING the ball? (i.e. Hitting the ball thin or blading the ball or hitting the top of the ball) resulting in the ball rolling along the ground or at a low trajectory ??????? A: This again usually happens with the irons and is a result of the ball being played too far forward in the stance.
Rx/correction;***** Try putting the ball in the center of the stance for all shots played off the ground. This should result in striking the ball at the BOTTOM of the SWING ARC which is at the CENTER of your STANCE. "HAPPY GOLFING"**
