Why am I SLICING
By: Golf Guru Pete Kearney - Director of Golf Instruction
SLICING Q: Why am I SLICING my shots, especially my tee shots????????
A: The most common CAUSE for slicing is the downswing path going from OUTSIDE to INSIDE across the ball (the farther OUTSIDE to IN the worse the slice to a point where it is referred to as a BANANA ball!!) DISCRIPTION This is the most common problem I have encountered in teaching thousands of lessons, affecting both low and high handicappers, left hand and right hand players. Not only do you lose distance but you usually end up in trouble (woods, out of bounds etc !!!!!!!)
It affects both LEFT and RIGHT handed players equally.. SLICE: RIGHT hander...ball first goes left of target then swings right into the woods!! LEFT hander...ball first goes right of target then swings left into the woods !! The REASON most golfers on their downswing, swing OUTSIDE to IN across the ball (sometimes referred to as OVER THE TOP) is due to the way their shoulders are aligned at the initial SET UP to the ball, (they align their shoulders OPEN relative to the target line).
Rx/correction;
When you SET UP to the ball align your shoulders SQUARE or slightly CLOSED to the target line.
On the downswing focus on swinging along the line of the shoulders. Should bring that BAD SLICE down to a slight FAD, (shoulders square), or a nice DRAW plus DISTANCE, (shoulders slightly closed)..
note; your DOWNSWING PATH will usually follow the ALIGNMENT of your SHOULDERS at SET UP time, and the ball will start out the same direction as your DOWNSWING PATH !!!
SET UP DRILL to practice;
Put a club across your shoulders and practice OPENING, SQUARING, and CLOSING your shoulders to ingrain a good habit of SQUARING or preferably slightly CLOSING your shoulders at setup. This is one of the SET UP BASICS that must be practiced until it is automatic or you will fall back to your comfort zone and set up with your shoulders OPEN which will result in that nasty SLICE again !
